As writers, we’ve always been guided by the inverted pyramid when creating copy. This is the most basic principle of writing: putting the most important, newsworthy and factual stuff first. It means readers get the facts quickly and stories can be edited (always from the bottom first) without valuable info being lost.
But the world we once knew has changed. As print publications face harder and harder times, online news is where it’s at. Digital news sites want to keep readers around for as long as possible, so they’ve turned that pyramid on its head. Now, my friends, you’ve often got to scroll to the bottom of a story to get that key info. It’s a big change for people who, like us, have the original pyramid of old ingrained into our brains.
